Margaret E. Swanson, 86, of Sioux City, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Mrs. Swanson was born September 28, 1914, in Vail, Iowa, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (O'Connor) McCullough. She moved with her family to Sioux City as a child. She attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from East High School in 1932. She also attended National Business Training College. She was employed as a bookkeeper with local cleaners and as a secretary at the Sioux City Air Base during World War II.

She married Alton C. Swanson on August 5, 1942, in Sioux City.The couple opened, owned and operated Greenville Pharmacy in Sioux City for many years. Her husband died January 22, 1987.

She was a member of Nativity Catholic Church, Confraternity of Christian Mothers and a former member of Carmelite Guild Board. She was a volunteer at the Catholic Bargain Center for many years. She enjoyed golfing and playing bridge.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Cathie and Hanley Dawson III of Chicago, Ill., and Sandy and Homer Lichtenwalter III of Edmond, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Megan, Hanley, Elizabeth and Patrick Dawson and Homer, Chris and Brian Lichtenwalter; two sisters, Betty Bahle of Omaha and Mary Anderson of Salt Lake City; a brother, Jerome McCullough of Lompoc, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Peter and James McCullough; and a sister, Kathleen Terry.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Nativity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Pallbearers were Hanley and Patrick Dawson, Homer, Chris and Brian Lichtenwalter and Jack McTaggart. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Larkin Northside Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
